Meaty sauces with rich earthy undertones and accurate textures and viscosity are every meat lovers favorite. But, what happens when you pop open a bottle of red wine while making that savory sauce? It gets a hundred times better and turns into the classic Red Wine Demi-Glace Sauce! Red Wine DemiRed wine demi is a popular accompaniment to a range of meats and has a rich, brown consistency. This sauce is known as Marchand de Vin or red wine reduction sauce in some regions and is simply delicious with roasts and steaks. Purists may raise their eyebrows here, but once you see a few simple recipes here, your taste buds will be won over. What is Demi-Glace Sauce? If you have heard some popular sauces names like mushroom demi glace, peppercorn demi glace, etc., and are wondering what really is this constantly recurring ‘demi glace’, then I must tell you that is a big deal in the world of culinary sauces. Demi-glace is basically a rich, concentrated yet viscous brown sauce that is simmered with patience and care until it turns into a beautiful glaze which has a meaty flavor in its backdrop and complements almost every main dish it accompanies. It tastes amazing with red meats specifically and adds a signature next level to grilled steaks and roasts too. It is traditionally made by roasting meat bones, mainly beef and veal, and extracting the stock from them by constant simmering and reducing. This meaty brown stock is then combined with Espagnole sauce in the ratio 1:1 and the mixture is slowly reduced to half its volume. A lot of care is taken so as to not burn over the sauce. These days, however, one can cut short the steps and enjoy an equally rewarding sauce by combining available beef stock and the classic Espagnole sauce and reducing it to half. You absolutely do not have to make it from scratch, therefore. Demi-glace is, therefore, unofficially a classic French sauce, though not included in the 5 mother sauces. Toggle for Related Popular Posts Selecting the WineWe hunted down the best recipe and fortunately got acquainted with and tried out this simple Red Wine Demi Glace Recipe inspired by Julia Child. But before we share this cracking recipe with you, some advice over wine selection is imperative. Picking out the right red wine for your sauce is as important as that thickening agent you pick up for your sauces and soups. We recommend incorporating some smooth yet bold fruity and zesty flavors into your sauce through new world wines. The savory notes of meat are subtly cut by the sugar and the spiciness is complemented with the fruity nectar. To name a few, the California Zinfandel and Washington Syrah are perfect for this. If you are looking for a taste of the old gold times, then a Sherry or Madeira cannot be defeated. If you are looking for your red wine demi to go seamlessly with mushrooms and beef then old world Spanish and French wines are the best way to go. A Cabernet Sauvignon will greatly complement such flavor profiles as well. Sharing is Caring Like what you read so far? How about help us to spread this AWESOME post to your friend and family? How to Make Red Wine Demi Sauce at HomeNow for making the ultimate sauce – all you need is to first grab a heavy-bottomed large pan and melt some butter in it. Once the butter has completely melted, add the beef/veal stock to it and let it simmer for a few minutes. Add an equal portion of red wine to this stock and bring it to a boil. Turn down the heat and allow the mix to simmer and reduce until it has become half of its previous volume. Strain or remove the scum that accumulates on top. Once the volume has considerably gone down, check if it has reached demi-glace state by dipping a spoon. If the back of the spoon is thoroughly coated and the sauce has reached a semi-viscous state, then voila! Your sauce is ready! Add more butter if needed and chop up some rosemary and thyme to add to it. What Does This Sauce Go Best With?An addition of shallots and mushrooms in the red wine demi sauce while preparation, lends an even more beautiful texture and taste. The aroma is enriched as well as the savory flavor. Now once you have your sauce ready, what do you pair it with? Most commonly, chefs prepare red wine sauce for filet mignon, which is an expensive cut of beef meat and tastes sumptuous if slow roasted over a wire rack to perfection. Other meats this sauce is perfect as an accompaniment for are pork, chicken and duck. Mushroom demi glace chicken and red wine demi glace for pork are two traditional exemplary recipes. All in all, the sauce of the day is apt for a Barbeque fiesta in your backyard with the most delicious meats to savor. Red Wine Demi Mother Sauce – BordelaiseIn case you are unaware, there are 5 classic French sauces that are the mothers and fathers of all the sauces in the world. They have been around for centuries and their recipes are best left untouched. Our sauce of the day finds its roots in the classic Bordelaise Sauce. Bordelaise is a classic steak sauce which is also reduced to a demi-glace to render a flavor bomb and is named after the Bordeaux region of France that is famous for its superior wines. This brown sauce too has an exceptional meaty flavor which goes down well with poached and sliced beef marrow. Shallots, bay leaves, thyme, red/white wine, peppercorns, butter and meat stock is required to build this sauce. Other classic French Sauces are – Veloute, Béchamel, tomato and Hollandaise. Red Wine Mushroom Demi Glace RecipeThere are easily over a hundred modern and traditional sauce recipes that draw their inspiration from and have at their core the red wine demi glace. We surfed through dozens of sauce recipes using demi glace and red wine demi glace to finally get across our most favorite rendition of it - another classic and very popular red wine and wild mushroom sauce. It goes like this – in a skillet, place some butter and oil and heat until they start to foam. Chop up some shallots and add to the pan, sauté for 2-3 minutes until they soften up. To this, add some sliced and halved mushrooms - oyster, shitake, white, and sprinkle some thyme, salt and pepper. Stir for a few minutes and then add the red wine; continue stirring while the alcohol evaporates. Once this thickens up, pour in beef juices and stock and stir some more till everything combines well. You can add some cream and butter once the concoction has cooled down and season according to your taste preferences. Chives can also be added optionally and believe us, this recipe is worth trying out! Demi Glace SubstitutesAll the above sauces and their renditions can prove to be very complicated to make and savor at home. Our home cooks, therefore, get another trick from us – substitutes. No matter what your issue or apprehension, from the usage of bones to the usage of leftover beef gravy, this place has got it all covered. Whether it is concentrating your glace sauce or substituting the recipe with vinegar, sherry or cornstarch to make it even simpler and flavor-packed, you can brew up some sauce of your own. What to Keep in MindWhen purchasing a sushi knife, you may wonder why you need a special knife exclusively for preparing sushi. I had the same question – why couldn’t I just use the regular knives on my kitchen top? I did my research and found out this: Sushi knife sets are designed and created using a single angle bevel, which means that only one side of your sushi knife is sharpened enough to seamlessly and clearly cut through the sushi providing the perfect angle. They are crafted using high-quality carbon steel which gives sushi knives that superior and finer edge over regular ones. Also, a knife particularly created for sushi has a much thinner and sharper blade which is apt for producing those artistic cuts and angles. Regular blades are not easy to maneuver with as they are very heavy to begin with. Sushi knives, therefore, are specially built for the preparation of your artistic feast. A word of caution – sushi knives are high maintenance and are prone to rust, so take precautions to ensure the longevity of your investment. Taking Care of Your Sushi KnifeMaintenance of sushi knives is a little different and more cautiously done as compared to regular knives. Sushi knives are not made up of ceramic or pure stainless steel; rather they are fabricated from high-carbon steel. One needs to take precautions in order to ascertain their durability. Failing to do so may result in development of rusty spots on the knife blade. Refrain from cutting bones, frozen items and any other food ingredients other than those that go into making delicious sushi. Always make smooth, clear cuts and avoid twisting the knife frequently. Carbon steel sushi knives need to be thoroughly cleaned and dried after every use. Though some knives boast about how dishwasher safe they are, the best way to ensure their longevity is by cleaning them manually with a mild soap and some warm water. You can read about more tips on how to care for your sushi knives here. Also, never work with a blunt blade. Always sharpen the knife before start using it. And each of this is important to ensure that you feel perfectly safe and comfortable when wearing them in the kitchen. 1. Cushion and ComfortThe first thing you want to look at is the cushioning and comfort of the shoes. Make sure that the pair that you are buying has a thick platform with slightly higher heels and comes with lots of padding. Of course, with all these thick platforms and padding, select one that is not too heavy as you don’t want to drag a pair of heavy shoes around all day long. 2. Arch SupportThere is low, medium and high arch support and you need to find one that matches your feet to get the proper arch support for your body. For example, if a person with flat feet uses shoes that have high arch support, they will end up hurting their metatarsals. All chefs, whether they are professionals or could be just like you who love spending time in the kitchen, a good knife is any chefs most fundamental and essential tool. Interestingly enough, many chefs have one thing in common, that is they all preferred to use Japanese knife. Is yourself like-minded too? In this quick guide, we will look into tips in selecting a Japanese knife and what are the best Japanese knives to buy. Toggle for Table of Contents Guide to Selecting the Best Japanese KnifeMany people often buy the whole set of knives and some of which are either used very infrequently or not used at all. Remember that about 60% to 70% of the cutting work is done by one or two knives, from slices, dices, minces, juliennes and de-bones. Instead of buying the whole set of knives, perhaps you should consider with one or two, to begin with. Find What Suits YouBefore buying a knife, there are a few qualities of the knife you need to know:
LengthTo choose the right length of the knife, there are two factors you must take into consideration. First, the size of the chopping board and the workspace. If you do not have a spacious room for your elbow and with just a small chopping board, you need a short Japanese Knife unless otherwise. Second, the size of the foods that you regularly prepare. If you often work with big items like a huge slab of meats, watermelon or even a cabbage, you will find a short Japanese knife does not come in handy, but you need a longer one. You need to have these two in the plan before you decide to choose a Japanese knife. The Difference between the SteelMany edges of the Stainless Steel knives do not hold well properly unless they have been heating treated or hardened by other methods that were to make the blade. If one knife does not have a proper making process on its blade, the knife will lose the edge pretty quickly. And you do not want that to happen to your knife.

In this post, we will be sharing the best gas stove brands with you. Read on and find out more about the difference between the gas and other ranges, and know what the brands that you could consider purchased for your kitchen. Toggle for Table of Contents
Quick Navigation
Different Type of Kitchen StoveThere are varieties of stove brands that you can choose to fit your perfect kitchen. You can make a choice between 3 types such as gas, electric and induction. Of course, each type of these stoves would have its benefits and shortfalls. However, the power source in your kitchen may restrict your option. For example, if a gas range is what you previously owned, the significant construction of gas lines is a must and needed to run a gas range. If you want to change from gas range to either electric or induction, challenging and expensive renovations are necessary to perform unless you are starting from scratch. Therefore, choose wisely of the choice of range you would want to fit into your kitchen for a long haul. However, there is no clear advantage or disadvantage for each type of stove but rather the preference for one over the other. Toggle for Related Popular Posts What is the Difference?Gas RangeGas ranges create flames and blistering heat which would heat almost any shape of pans, including woks that are beveled and round bottoms. The flames are usually formed in shape of a ring. Also, you can see gaps in the center that are often produce less heat. Many professional cooks prefer gas stove range because it provides a visual indicator of what is happening of the heat below the pan! So, if you are the person that often cook, you will understand that the gas range is the most preferred range when comes into comparison with the induction or electric. Electric RangeElectric ranges with glass tops would be harder to maintain as it could be easily scratched by cast iron skillets. However, the extra counter space on the flat surface can serve a useful purpose in a nutshell. Besides that, most spills are easy to clean up if you scorch food on the burner ring. The electric ranges provide heat evenly at the bottom of your pans; there are heat options for your cooking as well. But the heating from the electric stove is often slow to heat up the pan, and it would not heat up as hot as the gas’. Induction RangeInduction ranges are more expensive compared to the gas and the electric stove. The induction ranges look similar to the electric ranges, but it is safer, particularly suitable for beginner cooks. Spillage is usually even easier to clean compare to the electric ranges because food does not cook on an empty element. The surface is cool to touch once the pan is removed from the cooking ring, but you are limited to only magnetic pots and pans cookware for the induction ranges stove. Cookware that is induction-friendly usually will have a logo imprint at the bottom of the pot and pans indication for induction use. Serious Cooks Go for Gas RangesYup, most of the serious cooks would buy gas ranges stove. The bright side of using the gas ranges is that you can still use it when the electricity is out. Furthermore, you have quick access to the heat flame for other purposes such as roast foods directly over the fire. But before you opt for a gas range, there are few considerations to make. Determining the SizeWhen come to selecting a suitable rated gas ranges, we looked for extra features (that would be a bonus if there is any), a combination of cooktop and oven. The best gas stovetops come in many different sizes, often the 36-inch and 32-inch gas stovetops. To choose the right size of the stovetop for your kitchen between the two common sizes, it is recommended that you measure the largest pot size of yours so you can see how it fits having a few largest pots on several burners on the stovetop. Easy Stovetop Configurations and EfficiencyMost of the gas stovetops are using electrical ignition with no pilot light, but newer models these days have closed burners to prevent foods from falling below the burner and the surface of the cooktop. However, the cast iron grate surface is often cover the whole cooktop; this would allow moving pans across the stovetop more efficiently without awkwardly lifting it. Many gas stove brands today have dishwasher-safe grates to make convenient for many modern cooks with hustle bustle lifestyle. Moreover, the gas ranges stovetop should have dedicated burners for its one most demanding task, that is, to quickly boil a pot of water and deliver enough even heat for searing and frying purposes. Clean-upsClean-up is also one-of-the-must take in consideration before you purchase a gas ranges stovetop. Unfortunately, the most modern gas stovetops today are still not as easy to clean and maintain compared to the electric and induction ranges. A sealed burner will be easy to clean, and the bonus for the recessed pan which helps keep any liquid spill in place. However, the gas stovetops manufacturers still continue to improve the design and usability. Sharing is Caring Like what you read so far? As most of us have a microwave oven at home, you could have probably asked this question before, “Is Styrofoam microwavable?” Is it safe to microwave food in Styrofoam or food container made of foam? Is it hazardous to our health? Well, the answer to that is NO! It is not safe to microwave Styrofoam because it is a petroleum-based plastic product made from polystyrene and it is almost never safe to microwave any plastic or foam product. Toggle for Table of Contents What Happen When Styrofoam is Put Into Microwave? The microwave is such a convenient kitchen appliance, but you need to be careful when using it. Microwaving Styrofoam is something you don’t want to do. When you microwave your food in Styrofoam containers, you will most likely smell plastic burning, and that could also mean that the toxic from the plastic which makes the Styrofoam container is leeching into your food. When you microwave Styrofoam, it doesn’t mean that the Styrofoam will melt right away. It would take up to more than 30 seconds and also at a temperature of 212 degrees Fahrenheit or above before the Styrofoam container starts melting. Now even if the Styrofoam container did not melt when you heat up your food in it, as we mentioned earlier, the toxins from the plastic product will leech into your food and goes into your body when you consume the food from the Styrofoam container which you heat your food in the microwave. You won’t get sick immediately or see the effects right away, but on the long run, it is extremely harmful to your body. Toggle for Related Popular Posts What Is Styrofoam and The Risk of Microwaving It?One of the chemical contents in Styrofoam is a Styrene, and this compound is known for causing cancer disease, loss of vision and hearing, impaired memory and concentration and also attacks our nervous system. According to The National Toxicology Program (NTP),” Styrene is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on limited evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans, but sufficient studies in experimental animals, and supporting data on mechanisms of carcinogenesis.” The NTP has reported that styrene could be a possible cause of cancer and workers in the manufacturing places that has been exposed to this chemical has a high risk of damage in white blood cells, lymphoma, and leukemia. Styrene has also been linked with other issues such as fatigue, headache, and respiratory problems. Although the US Department of Labor, Occupational Safety & Health Administration are aware of the adverse effects from Styrene, no action has yet been taken to limit its usage. That being said, if you are someone who often heats up food in containers made from Styrene, you might be experiencing irritation to your eyes and skin and also experiencing gastrointestinal problems. Microwave-safe Styrofoam ContainersThe usual Styrofoam appears to be foam-like, lightweight and is used to hold your food or drinks temporarily. But the truth is, there are two types of Styrofoam, the later which appears to be microwave-safe. The original Styrofoam is as we mentioned above is made from polystyrene which contains chemicals like styrene and benzene which is carcinogenic and can damage reproductive systems and cause other several health problems. Which means. This traditional Styrofoam container is definitely not safe for microwaving. Microwave-safe StyrofoamNow, the second type of Styrofoam which is said to microwave-safe isn’t exactly like the usual Styrofoam, but it is on certain levels a similar product that is using different and safer materials with lower hazardous compounds. It is still called Styrofoam and could probably look the same, but it is manufactured in a way to withstand higher temperature. This new version of Styrofoam is microwave safe to a certain extent. Extensive test on the materials to make this new type of Styrofoam has been done to ensure that whatever chemical that leech out is still safe to our health. If the Styrofoam passes the FDA review, there will be a notification on the material that is safe for microwaving. And how to tell if the Styrofoam is microwave-safe or not, just look at the bottom or the sides of the container for signs or warning. Sharing is Caring Like what you read so far? Types of Styrofoam Containers
So, Is Styrofoam Microwavable? To sum it all up, it is perhaps safer to not microwave any Styrofoam containers at all. If you really have no choice or needed to, do check first if the container is microwave-safe and even if it is microwave safe, try to keep the cooking time to not more than 30 seconds. So, can you microwave Styrofoam? I think a safer answer to the question is a straight NO. Unless the Styrofoam containers state that it is microwave-safe and in that case, it is also wise to take precautions as the melted material may release toxic which may leech into your food. ConclusionNow you know the answer to “is styrofoam microwavable?” so it’s up to you to opt for a safer dish to use for microwave like the glass. Glass is not only safe but also environmental friendly. So start using glass today and cook healthy and safe. The post Is Styrofoam Microwavable? (Are All Styrofoam Microwave-safe?) appeared first on Gordan Ladd's Kitchen. Almost everyone has a microwave oven at home today because it is so convenient when it comes up to heating up or cooking your food. It is easy, and it is fast. Of course, it is well known that plastic or metal containers are not suitable for the microwave but, what about glass? Can you microwave glass and is it safe? Toggle for Table of Contents How Is Glass Made? The glass is quite an extraordinary material, and it is created by mixing and melting lime silicate, soda ash and sand until it becomes liquid. After that, the liquid becomes cooled, and a crystalline like structure like frozen liquid will form. Everywhere around the world, glass is used in and out of the house. You can find glass in the form of decoration or windows in your house and also glassware or glass dish in the kitchen. So, Can You Microwave Glass?Glass dish is commonly used for the microwave because it has quite good heat resistant and it is also chemically inert, or in other words, it doesn’t react with the food items when cooking in the microwave oven. So, the quick answer is yes; you can microwave glass and using glass in the microwave is pretty safe and healthy too. However, not all glass is microwave-safe, though. And here is a list of thing you should not microwave too. Toggle for Related Popular Posts Are All Glass Microwave-safe?Now even though glass is commonly used for microwave, does it mean that all glass dish or containers are microwave-safe? Yes, even though chemicals don’t leach from the glass into the food like plastic when cook in the microwave, some glass dish may break or shatter due to the rapid temperature changes when going in and out of the microwave. Of course, some glasses is microwave-safe, and those are certified with a logo imprinted on the glass dish usually at the bottom. The label or logo is a symbol of a microwave with squiggly lines. However, if the glass dish doesn’t have a certified safe logo printed on them, it doesn’t mean that the glass will definitely break when placed in the microwave oven, though. A non-microwaveable glass may shatter when you take it out from the microwave as it cools, and this is due to the earlier mentioned rapid temperature changes. Trapped AirThe reason why glass that is not microwave-safe may shatter is because they have tiny air bubbles trapped in the glass during manufacturing and the air bubbles could expand when going through the microwave oven heating. If the air in the hollow space (bubble) expand to a certain extent, the glass will then shatter. Also, watch out of glass trimmed with metal as you know that metal is not microwave-safe and will spark and also cause the glass to break. If the glass dish that you are using is colored, make sure to check for microwave-safe label or logo as the dyes used for the color may not be food safe. Can You Microwave Cold Glass from the Freezer? If you are planning to microwave any food items taken out from the freezer together with the glass dish or container, there are a few things you need to make sure before you put it in the microwave. Make sure to allow the frozen food to thaw first to room temperature before transferring it into the microwave oven. When the container is removed from the freezer, there will be condensation on the surface of the container so make sure to wipe it away before putting the container in the microwave. Of course, when the microwave stops, remember to handle the glass dish with a pot holder or kitchen gloves to avoid burning yourself from the heat to reduce the risk of dropping the glass dish or container. Microwave-safe glass will still break if drop on the floor. Sharing is Caring Like what you read so far? How about help us to spread this AWESOME post to your friend and family? Turn On the HeatThe first thing you need to do is set the power of your microwave oven to the highest power setting. 2. Add WaterThe next thing you need to do is fill up a glass of measuring cup or bowl, then place the glass of water on the glass dish and put them in the microwave oven. Make sure to leave the glass dish empty. 3. Set the TimeAfter you have placed both the cup and dish in the oven, microwave it for 1 minute. If the glass dish is warm or hot after heating, it means that it is not microwave-safe. However, if the dish remains cool but only the cup is hot, it means that the glass dish is microwave safe. Also take note that, the area around the cup on the dish might be slightly warm but the rest of the dish is still cool, it is also microwave safe. Always Handle with CareNow that you have the answers to the question “Can You Microwave Glass?” always remember to practice safety precautions when using the microwave oven.
